I just found out about YouTube’s Vevo and was playing around with it a little bit. Here’s my quick review of the site. It reminds me of hulu, but for music. I like hulu so that’s a plus.

I had to sit through a 15 second AT&T commercial before I could watch the video clip. I don’t like commercials too much but can understand why they have them in there.
15 seconds seems a bit long for a 3 to 5 minute music video clip though. I’d like a 10 second clip; or maybe a way to build up watching of longer commercials to not have to sit through a commercial for each video.

The picture quality looks pretty good. Not sure what the native resolution is for it. In my quick readings the early sentiment said there wasn’t an HD version of the videos, but video quality was good.

I watched the 50 Cent – Do You Think About Me Premier Video. You can take a look at a couple of the screen captures that I have added below:

50 Cent Premier Do You Think About Me Video on Vevo navigation

One interesting thing is that there’s a logo for Amazon on the right hand bar, but the link redirects to iTunes to purchase 50 Cent’s new Album “Before I Self Destruct (Deluxe Version)”

50 Cent - Before I Self Destruct in iTunes

50 Cent on Vevo with Lyrics Enabled

I like the lyrics function. I’m not sure if that is part of google / youtube’s new captioning effort see NY Times article Google to Add Captions, Improving YouTube Videos that involved transcribing.

You can read more news about Vevo at:

Mashable shows Vevo Details
PC Mag’s Hands On: YouTube’s Vevo Music Video Site

From this article it seems that Universal Music Group has been in talks for awhile and working on this for some time. Since April 2009 at least…
Vevo Lives: YouTube, Universal Announce New Music Video JV

There’s also the VEVO channel on youtube itself:
YouTuve’s VEVO Channel

I’m not sure how this will affect mashups of videos on youtube, but it probably means the end of the wild wild west of videos on youtube. We’ll have to see how things go as YouTube rolls this out and it gets some more traction.

I definitely like the quality of the videos, and being able to link to a video without having to update or change links for violating TOS of youtube or copyright infringement.

Let me know what you think about Vevo

Well, like many people I heard all the buzz about google chrome and wanted to check it out for myself. So I hopped on over and read the comic about google chrome that started it all.

It’s a pretty interesting format and way of showing the functions of google’s browser, google chrome. I think it did a decent job of going through the processes and reasoning why they had setup the browser the way they did.

A couple of things I had researched after reading the comic was about the webkit. A lot of people were under the impression that the webkit was from apple, but actually apple had been using an open source code that can be found here that grew out of the KHTML and KDE open source projects.

Google Chrome is an open source web browser. After using it for a couple of days, I can say that it opens gmail and other javascript dependent web email apps like yahoo mail and even hotmail a lot quicker than firefox (and IE the occasional times that I’ve used it). I didn’t have a very scientific method of testing it, but it was just from my observation and interacting with gmail, grand central, yahoo mail and a few other sites that I frequently visit.

I do like the “most visited” view when I open a new tab. It saves me time in going to the websites that I usually use the most… namely gmail and yahoo mail.

I started missing some of the plugins that I use often with FireFox while using Chrome; but the speed and flexibility for Chrome has given me some high hopes to look forward to in new revisions.

The plugins that I use seem to see the most of in FireFox (and I just recently reloaded my computer and firefox plugins…so I’m a little more conscious about it than I normally would be) are All-in-One Gestures, Better Gmail 2 and Foxmarks.

I have played around with other web browsers in the past see my thoughts on flock here. But I usually end up going back to my trusty stand by of FireFox. Although it was rough going for a little while right after FireFox 3.0 came out and a lot of the plugins that I had used hadn’t been updated yet. But, we’re back to the good old trusty FireFox.

For now, I’ll be using google chrome mostly for checking email since it seems pretty snappy and fast at that. And I do like the fact that I can move the tabs around or even pop them out to a new window.

One of the other things that I noticed, and it might just be on my system is if I have google chrome open for awhile at the same time that I’m browsing with FireFox; occassionally I’ll have FireFox lock-up and not be able to close my tabs. I’m not sure if this is just because I had too many tabs open in FireFox or whatever the reason (it also usually starts to happen when FireFox starts to go over 100k in mem usage.

I’ll keep you posted on my thoughts as I continue to use google chrome and test it out on various web sites.

I was browsing around on the internet. Reading news and saw and ad for this “new” browser called Flock. Well, it may not be new for everyone, but it was new to me at least.

I’d actually read about it before but hadn’t thought much about it. But recently, I’ve begun to start using some of the web 2.0 technologies and this new browser is supposed to have a lot of features built in that integrate nicely with web 2.0 sites.

I just installed it about an hour ago and have been playing around with it a little bit. I’ll give a more through review of it after I’ve used it for a little while.

Before I had downloaded it, I had skimmed through a couple of reviews of it. One thing that I had noticed was that a reviewer had mentioned that it was a bit resource intensive for older computers. You can read more about that review here

I am using a bit of an older computer and it’s using 131,380 K of memory. It’s fairly close to firefox, but a bit more resource intensive from my not too scientific survey.

Flock is based on Mozilla Firefox codebase with additional functionalities. So far I’ve added my facebook into it and am testing the feed reader.

I haven’t really used feed reader’s too much; but will start giving it a try.

There’s also supposed to be the capability to post to blogs more easily with this browser; so hopefully I’ll be able to post more regularly. I’ll continue to give you feedback and updates as I use it and test it out over the next couple of weeks.

There’s also integration with flickr or photobucket. I haven’t used my flickr account in ages as I had hit the maximum of 250 pictures and hadn’t wanted to upgrade to a premium account. So I had migrated over to picasa.

I’ll have to dig up my flickr account again and see how it integrates; or I could always try out photobucket…

We’ll keep you updated.
